Names and Personal History:
Ginger: We adopted her in 2003 from a from past Wildwood Elementary school student.
We have five Leopard Geckos in all.
Native Habitat:
Asia Minor, Turkmenia and into western India.
Environment:
Leopard Geckos are terrestrial creatures from arid and semi-arid environments. They like daytime temperatures into the low 90s, with a nighttime drop-off to about 75 degrees F.
Physical Characteristics:
Leopard Gecko adults are approximately 6 inches from head to tip of tail. They have soft bumpy skin that is spotted (hence their name). Leopard Geckos have fat and water reserves in their tail, so the effects of a lost tail can be very detrimental to their health. One of the few Gecko species that has eye lids but they can also lick their eyeballs clean with their tongue.
Diet:
Leopard geckos are insectivores by nature and can subsist in captivity on a diet of crickets and mealworms, though variety is appreciated. Vitamin and calcium supplementation is crucial for proper growth and health maintenance.
