Common Tomato Frog

Dyscophus antongilii

pablo

Names and Personal History:
Heirloom: Heirloom was displayed at a "Frogs Exhibit" in San Francisco before being donated to Tree Frog Treks. Her age in unknown but we are estimating that she is around 5 years old. We have another Tomato Frog named Beefsteak.

Native Habitat:
Tomato Frogs are found in Madagascar and only on the wetter northern end of the island.

Environment:
Moist lowland forests, edges of rivers and freshwater marshes are these frogs preferred biotopes but they can also be found in drainage ditches and rural gardens. Habitat destruction is severely threatening this species and despite its name, the Common Tomato Frog, they are no longer very "common" at all.

Physical Characteristics:
Tomato Frogs have both toad and frog traits. They have the smooth skin of a frog but are able to secrete a latex like poison when preyed upon similar to most true toads. They are also similar to toads in that they do not have webbed feet or toe pads. Tomato Frogs range from reddish orange to a bright dark red with their bellie being a yellowish color. Male Tomato Frogs are not as brightly colored as females.

Diet:
Common Tomato Frogs are primarily insectivores but like most frogs and toads they will consume anything they can out move and fit in their mouths, including other amphibians.
